Hrafnhildur Hagalín (b. 1965) is one of Iceland's leading playwrights. She graduated from the Reykjavík College of Music as a classical guitarist and later studied Literature and Theatre at the University of Sorbonne, Paris III.

Amongst her plays are I am the Maestro, Reykjavík City Theatre 1990 (Icelandic Theatre Award 1991, Nordic Theatre Prize 1992, best foreign play in Italy 2004, translated and produced widely, e.g. Australia, Denmark, Finland, UK, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Slovenia); Easy now, Electra, National Theatre of Iceland 2001 (nominated for the Nordic Theatre Prize 2002, produced in France 2005); North, National Theatre of Iceland 2004; No Matter How Much We Try, a television play, Iceland State Broadcasting System 2005; Loners, six short radio plays, Iceland State Broadcasting System 2008 (Gríman, the Icelandic Radio Drama Award, Prix Europa nomination); Open House, Iceland State Broadcasting System 2012 (Gríman, the Icelandic Radio Drama Award, Nordic Radio Drama Award); Guilty, Akureyri Theatre 2013 and Iceland State Broadcasting System 2014 (nominated for the Nordic Theatre Prize, received Gríman, Icelandic Radio Drama Award, nominated for Prix Europa, produced off-off-Broadway in New York 2017); Avalanche, Reykjavík City Theatre 2017 (Gríman, Icelandic Theatre Award); and her most recent play, Home, premiered at the National Theatre of Iceland in February 2025 (nominated for the Icelandic Theatre Award 2025, received Best Male Actor Award).

Hrafnhildur has translated numerous plays, e.g. by Euripides, Henrik Ibsen, Arthur Miller, Harold Pinter, Sarah Kane and Wajdi Mouawad. Her first book of poetry, Beast in Its Own Skin, was published in 2022.

She worked as dramaturg at the Reykjavík City Theatre from 2014–2021 and as a dramaturg and Deputy Artistic Director at the National Theatre of Iceland from 2021–2023.

Hrafnhildur's plays have been published in Iceland and abroad (Iperborea, Io sono il Maestro, 2003; Oxford University Press, Easy now, Electre in Anthology of Modern Women Playwrights of Europe, 2002).

She is currently under commission to write a new play for the National Theatre of Iceland.
